Irene Dunne

VOCAL COACH

"I'm completely obsessed with finding the easiest way to describe what happens in a voice. I'll never get there. That's why I'm still doing it."
Irene was singing before she could speak in sentences, the youngest in a family where music wasn't a hobby, it was the air everyone breathed. Her parents performed as the folk duo Des & Kay, and all three of their children became singers and musicians. For Irene, the question of how the voice actually works started early, and never really left her alone.
She spent years performing, concerts, weddings, a long run of musical theatre from Sweeney Todd to Les Misérables, before teaching pulled her in. Not as a backup plan, but as the place where her real curiosity lived. What fascinated her wasn't the performance itself, but what was happening underneath it: the mechanics, the freedom, the moment a voice stops fighting itself and starts working with the singer.
That curiosity took her to international voice teacher Andres Martorell in 2012, and she's been deepening her understanding ever since. Now an IVA certified voice teacher, Irish Regional Director for MVT (Modern Vocal Training), and a tutor at the International College of Musical Theatre in Belfast. But credentials were never the point. They're just what happens when you stay obsessed with a question for long enough.

THE APPROACH

The three hats a singer must wear

01

The Machine

Airflow, range, muscular balance, resonance. The foundations that make everything else possible.

02

The Inventor

Once the mechanics work: how do you make this yours? Experimentation. Risk. Specificity.

03

The Storyteller

Every technical choice is in service of the story. The storyteller is who the audience listens to.

“I have found Irene’s lessons invaluable to me as a singer songwriter. I have thoroughly enjoyed the journey of finding & improving my voice and learning so much about this incredible instrument we all possess. Without her, I would still be wondering if I could pull this off and to sing my own songs would be a pipe dream.”

  • Terrie-Louise Duff

"I started vocal training with Irene having lost confidence in my vocal abilities. and it's been the best decision I have ever made. She has shown me how to use my instrument with confidence. It's such a safe and cosy environment where you can relax and be yourself. Irene has given me the tools to get my confidence back”

  • Celia Richard

“At age 50 I got paid for a gig for the first time. I would not have had the nerve to step on that stage and experience singing with seasoned jazz musicians. I’m working on my bridges and airflow, finding my real voice and believing I can get more opportunities. Irene magically finds and nurtures every talent, no matter how well hidden!”

“My singing career took off when Irene took me on as a rock singer It started a journey that thanks to Irene’s massive enthusiasm for her students, took me into singing classics from musicals and popular standards and gave me the confidence to take RIAM exams. I am hoping to have an EP soon!”
